Banned and Crowned: Heeney Wins Swans' Best and Fairest
On Thursday, Isaac Heeney claimed his third consecutive Bob Skilton Medal with 431 votes, now titled the "Most Valuable Player" award. The Sydney Swans star was absent from the ceremony while serving a club-imposed suspension.
Five players were suspended for a "serious breach of expected club behaviour and standards" following a late-night incident at East Melbourne's Pullman Hotel on August 16. The group has since returned to headquarters after serving the ban.
Despite missing three games, Heeney polled 431 votes to finish ahead of ruckman Brodie Grundy and key forward Charlie Curnow . Teammates Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, and James Jordon also placed in the top 10.
Victoria Police continue investigating an alleged sexual assault at the Pullman Hotel, though no charges have been laid. Swans chairman Andrew Pridham maintained the players' eligibility, citing the "presumption of innocence" regarding the separate legal matter.
Addressing the club's eligibility criteria, Pridham stated the decision aimed to protect vote integrity, adding that "Erasing a season of football... would, in our opinion, be inappropriate." The club now focuses on the pre-season.
