Bangladesh’s foreign minister defeats Cyprus’ ambassador to be UN General Assembly president
Rahman will serve a one-year term and has pledged to focus on peace, climate action, human rights and UN reform.
Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman was elected President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly session with 99 votes, defeating Cyprus' Andreas Kakouris who received 91 votes in a secret ballot.
Rahman vowed to focus on peacekeeping, gender equality, and addressing global challenges such as climate change and geopolitical tensions during his one-year term starting September 8.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised Rahman's commitment to strengthening the multilateral system and pledged full support for his presidency.
The presidency rotates among UN regional groups, with the 81st session allocated to the Asia-Pacific group, marking Bangladesh's second election to this position and reflecting the country's diplomatic stature and trust in the international community.
