Bangladesh says better environment needed for India visit amid rift over ousted leader
Dhaka says the trip depends on progress in extraditing Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives, as talks over timing continue and India’s request remains under examination.
On Sunday, Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said he will not visit India until New Delhi extradites former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India following her 2024 ouster.
Foreign ministry spokesperson A.K.M. Shahidul Karim stated Dhaka requires a "propitious environment" for the visit, demanding Hasina's extradition and the handover of suspects linked to activist Sharif Osman Hadi's killing.
Diplomatic tensions escalated after Hasina held an open press interaction in New Delhi on August 5, which Dhaka claims vitiated bilateral relations; she faces a death sentence in Bangladesh for crimes against humanity.
India's Ministry of External Affairs maintains extradition is a legal matter handled through established procedures, though officials previously invited Rahman for a bilateral visit and the upcoming BRICS summit.
Rahman has notably visited Malaysia and China since taking office in February, departing from traditional diplomatic patterns as Bangladesh pursues a "Bangladesh First" foreign policy rooted in sovereign equality and non-interference.
