Powerful storm hits Baltic countries, killing 2 and leaving hundreds of thousands without power

The storm also disrupted flights, rail service and ferries as more than 500,000 people lost electricity across the Baltic region, officials said.

  • A powerful cyclone struck Latvia and Lithuania on Saturday, killing two people and leaving around half a million residents without electricity as the storm brought heavy rain and strong winds across the region.
  • Wind speeds exceeded 67 mph in Riga on Saturday, causing a building in Jelgava to collapse and killing one person; rail and ferry services were disrupted by falling debris.
  • Strong winds also battered Estonia with significant damage to its western and northern regions, while Northeastern Poland saw over 100,000 residents lose power. Many stations recorded half of their average monthly rainfall on Saturday.
  • Over 200,000 residents remained without electricity on Sunday morning following the severe weather, with mobile services also disrupted. Authorities expected conditions to improve throughout Sunday and stabilize by Monday as the cyclone exited the region.
  • Andris Viksna from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center called this the most severe storm in Latvia since 2005. Viksna noted that human-caused climate change may have plausibly intensified the rainfall, though full climate assessment requires further study.
