FAA Gives Approval for Trump’s Arch, Says It Won’t Interfere with Flights
The agency said the 260-foot arch would not affect flight operations, but it must be lit and reported before construction begins.
- On Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration determined President Donald Trump's planned triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery poses no hazard to flights at Reagan Washington National Airport. The agency reported it would have "no substantial adverse effect on the safe and efficient utilization of the navigable airspace."
- Expected to stand at around 250 feet, the proposed arch would be located 3,000 feet from the airport within its main approach corridor. The structure must be marked with a light on top to help pilots navigate the complex airspace.
- Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois called the project "dangerous," citing safety efforts following a collision in January 2025. Veterans have sued to block the arch, arguing it would destroy historic sightlines between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington.
- The National Capital Planning Commission, a key federal agency, has only provided preliminary approval for the project. The administration is attempting to fast-track Section 106 approval by asking consulting parties to sign a draft Memorandum of Agreement.
- Interior Secretary Doug Burgum is eyeing the commission's November meeting for final approval. The FAA noted the administration must provide at least 10 days' notice before construction officially begins, while legal challenges remain ongoing.
