Australian soldier killed in training exercise remembered as 'beloved leader'
Five soldiers were injured and the Australian Defence Force is investigating the rollover that killed Corporal Brendan Hannam during routine training.
On Monday, Corporal Brendan Hannam, a 28-year-old Australian soldier, was killed when a military vehicle overturned during a training exercise at Mount Bundey, roughly 130km south-east of Darwin, with five others injured.
The Mount Bundey Training Area spans 117,000 hectares and serves as a major military facility for joint live-fire exercises involving Australian and US forces, located south of the Arnhem Highway in the Northern Territory.
A member of the 5th/7th army battalion, Hannam was described by Chief of Army Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as a much-loved junior leader who served two operational tours to Afghanistan in 2019 and trained Ukrainians with British armed forces.
Emergency services evacuated five injured soldiers by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital at 7:30pm Monday and by plane two hours later, with two in stable condition at the hospital and three receiving care at Robertson Barracks.
The death marks the sixth ADF military training fatality in 2026, following a fatal parachuting accident in May, as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said there are no safe or easy days for those who serve, and Opposition Leader Angus Taylor called it a tragic reminder of risks personnel face.
