Chamoli Tunnel Accident: Another Worker's Body Found, Death Toll Reaches 9
Officials said rescue teams found one more body as they kept clearing sludge and debris, with one worker still missing.
On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, rescue teams found another body inside the Chamoli tunnel, raising the death toll to nine from the accident that occurred five days earlier.
A landslide on August 13 inundated the three-kilometre tunnel at the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation's Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydroelectric project, trapping twenty-two workers beneath debris and water.
Chamoli District Information Officer Dheeraj Karki told PTI that three of five JCB machines trapped in debris have been retrieved, accelerating the search with National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, and Indo-Tibetan Border Police teams.
Officials sent the recovered body to Gopeshwar District Hospital for identification while noting that twelve other workers sustained injuries in the accident, with rescue operations continuing on a war footing.
Significant sludge continues blocking the tunnel, forcing teams to deploy suction pumps and other equipment to extract the final two trapped JCB machines and locate the remaining missing worker.
The body of the last worker trapped in the Chamoli tunnel accident in Uttarakhand has been recovered. The rescue operation, which began on August 13th, has now been concluded. A total of 10 workers have died and 12 were injured in the accident. The body of the last missing worker has also been recovered and sent for post-mortem.
