With V-16 Power and a Streamlined 1930s Design, This Audi Might Be the Coolest Car to Debut in 2026
Audi Tradition and Crosthwaite & Gardiner rebuilt the lost 1930s racer in three years, and the V16 now makes 513 hp.
Audi has recreated the historic Auto Union speed-record car known as the Lucca, or Rennlimousine, working with historical engineering specialists Crosthwaite & Gardiner to revive the silver machine that achieved 203 mph in 1935.
Originally built in the 1930s, the car featured a supercharged 5.0-liter V-16 engine producing 370 horsepower, achieving the record-setting speed in the Italian city of Lucca over 90 years ago.
Audi fitted the recreation with a 6.0-liter V-16 engine producing 513 horsepower to enhance durability; the vehicle weighs 2116 pounds and achieved a wind-tunnel drag coefficient of 0.43.
The revived Rennlimousine will make its on-track debut at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, with Audi confirming demonstration runs scheduled from July 9 to July 12.
This project follows Audi's 2024 recreation of the Type 52, a forgotten Auto Union prototype; the rebuild, commissioned by Audi Tradition, utilized original documents and historical photos from the 1930s.
