Oklahoma Principal Crowned Prom King After Stopping Potential School Shooting
Attorneys want to restrict public comments and social media posts before a May 1 hearing to protect the jury pool, a defense lawyer said.
On Thursday, attorneys for 20-year-old Victor Hawkins filed a motion for a gag order in his Pauls Valley school shooting case, seeking to limit public discussion ahead of a May 1 hearing.
Hawkins, a former student at Pauls Valley High School, allegedly planned the attack influenced by the Columbine massacre, an incident that has drawn national attention since April 7.
Pauls Valley Principal Kirk Moore intervened by tackling the suspect while sustaining a leg injury. Madison Knighten, a former student, said Moore 'would do anything to save those kids.'
Students honored Moore as prom king this weekend for his heroic actions. During the ceremony, an announcer declared, 'Ladies and gentlemen, our king.'
Criminal defense attorney Ed Blau noted gag orders are common in high-profile cases. In smaller counties, he explained, 'you want little things said as possible if you're going to get a fair jury at some point.
