Rahul Gandhi said India's democratic system is under a wholesale attack, posing the biggest risk to the country’s diverse traditions and languages, he told a Colombian university.
- On Thursday , Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, said the single-biggest risk to India is the attack on its democracy at EIA University, Envigado, Colombia.
- Arguing for pluralism, Gandhi said democracy gives space for India’s 16-17 major languages and many religions to coexist and thrive.
- Contrasting China, Gandhi said India cannot suppress its people or adopt authoritarianism and must build a production model competing with China within democracy.
- The BJP responded by saying Rahul Gandhi was defaming India on foreign soil, and senior BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad criticised him for not extending Vijayadashami greetings.
- On tour, Gandhi also noted he is optimistic about India’s prospects and highlighted strengths in engineering and healthcare during his four-nation South America tour, where he met Colombian President Lidio Gracia.
