At least 15 migrant bodies wash ashore in eastern Libya, sources say
On Monday, at least 15 migrant bodies washed ashore in Khumas, Libya, following a boat capsize, with the Emergency Medicine and Support Centre confirming their burial approximately 118 kilometers from Tripoli.
Since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising toppled Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has served as a primary transit route for migrants fleeing poverty and conflict toward Europe, while the oil-dependent economy also draws impoverished workers.
Recoveries occurred along the Tobruk coastline, where Tobruk Red Crescent volunteers in hazmat suits retrieved bodies from rocky shorelines, as two security officials warned the badly decomposed remains indicate more casualties likely exist.
Ten survivors told a navy source their vessel carried around 61 people before capsizing, while the centre separately treated 13 migrants who survived the journey off the coast.
Images of the recovery efforts circulated on Facebook, reflecting the severe risks involved in what has become another somber chapter in the ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting those attempting dangerous Mediterranean crossings.
