Cuba announced on Friday the death of Assata Shakur, her real name Joanne Deborah Byron, a black American revolutionary activist, a figure in the radical struggles of the 1970s and sought by the FBI for more than forty years. She died on 25 September 2025 in Havana, at the age of 78, "due to health problems and her advanced age", according to a statement from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
