Zubeen Garg Death: 4 Charged with Murder; Singer's Cousin Accused of Culpable Homicide
The Assam Police SIT charged four individuals with murder and others with related offences after examining over 300 witnesses and compiling a 3,500-page charge sheet.
- On Friday, the Special Investigation Team of Assam Police submitted a charge sheet to the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Kamrup , Guwahati, SIT Chief Munna Prasad Gupta said.
- After Garg's death in Singapore on September 19, the Assam Government constituted an SIT led by Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta to investigate the drowning of Zubeen Garg, renowned Assamese singer.
- The SIT presented voluminous evidence, with the main chargesheet around 2,500 pages and combined bank records, digital evidence and forensic reports totaling approximately 12,000 pages, including an over 3,500-page packet transported in four trunks.
- The chargesheet accuses four of the seven arrested of murder—Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharatha Sharma, Shekharjyoti Goswami, Amritprava Mahanta—while Sandipan Garg faces culpable homicide and two security officers criminal breach of trust; seven arrests and over 300 witnesses were reported.
- The Singapore Police Force said on October 17 it did not suspect foul play, while Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called the death 'plain and simple murder' and said the probe may take three more months before State Coroner review.
