A’s Slugger Nick Kurtz Could Miss the Rest of the Season with a Thumb Injury
Manager Mark Kotsay said Kurtz needs four weeks in a brace after a platelet-rich plasma injection, making a return before season’s end uncertain.
- Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz is "looking unlikely" to return for the remainder of the 2026 season. Manager Mark Kotsay confirmed on Tuesday that the 23-year-old requires a brace for four weeks following a platelet-rich plasma injection.
- The 23-year-old initially suffered a right capsule sprain on July 11 before returning two weeks later. A new discovery of a torn MCP joint in the same thumb, documented after his return, complicates recovery significantly.
- Following the platelet-rich plasma injection on Aug. 4, Kotsay noted that four weeks of immobilization makes a return before the end of September difficult to envision. His production struggled after his initial return, going 1 for 18 in seven games.
- With Kurtz sidelined, the Athletics will rely on veteran utility player Jeff McNeil to fill the first base position. McNeil, 34, joined the team this season after spending eight years with the New York Mets.
- The Athletics currently sit 13.5 games out of the division lead and 13 games out of a Wild Card spot. Since the All-Star Break, the team has posted a 6-18 record, compounding roster challenges beyond Kurtz's absence.
