DOJ releases name of officer involved in fatal Madison confrontation
The officer has 10 years and 10 months of law enforcement service, and four responding officers were placed on administrative leave during the homicide investigation.
On Monday, the Wisconsin Department of Justice identified Madison Police Department officer Kiel Baitinger-Peterson as the officer who fatally shot 38-year-old Corey Ruiz on July 22 during an attempted arrest on Williamson Street.
Responding to reports of vehicle tampering and attempted burglary, four officers confronted Ruiz, who fled on a bicycle before a physical struggle ensued where officials say Ruiz "brandished a knife and injured" Baitinger-Peterson.
Before the shooting, two other officers attempted to use a Taser on Ruiz "without success," while Baitinger-Peterson, with nearly 11 years of experience, fired the fatal shots as bystanders captured the struggle on cellphone video.
All four involved officers were placed on paid administrative leave pending the state investigation. City workers cleared a protest encampment at the shooting site last Tuesday, resulting in several arrests.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the Ruiz family, has called for charges against the officer. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway plans to include funding for body-worn cameras in the next budget for the Madison Police Department.
