A study conducted in Istanbul by Dr. Özkan Çapraz, a lecturer at the ITU Eurasian Institute of Earth Sciences, revealed that hospital admissions increase during periods of increased air pollution. The study examined approximately 3.94 million hospital admissions between 2013 and 2017.
A study conducted at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) compared approximately 3.94 million hospital admissions in Istanbul between 2013 and 2017 due to asthma, acute bronchitis, and COPD with air quality data. The study determined that those over 65 years of age are particularly sensitive to pollution, with the effects of nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter being more prominent.
It has been observed that hospital visits increase in Istanbul during periods of increased air pollution. Complaints are particularly prevalent among children, people over 65, and those with conditions such as COPD and asthma. Experts have warned that outdoor activities should be limited during periods of high pollution.
