German Chancellor in Kyiv: "Ukraine Will Need Our Support"
The package includes 1 billion euros in military aid and 350 million euros for energy repairs, officials said.
On Sunday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Kyiv, where a Russian drone struck a bridge during his trip despite warnings from the Russian Foreign Ministry for visitors to avoid the capital.
During his fourth visit since 2022, Merz called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end his "barbaric attacks," stating Germany remains Ukraine's most important backer despite recent domestic political opposition to spending.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a $1.5 billion German support package including $1 billion in military aid and $350 million for energy repairs, while the two leaders signed 15 agreements worth more than $9.6 billion.
Merz emphasized that "Ukraine will need all our support in the coming weeks" as winter approaches, with both nations jointly developing interceptor drones to counter long-range weapons capable of striking targets 620 miles away.
Visiting the damaged Academy of Sciences, where two people died in a drone strike last week, Zelenskyy condemned the "terrible situation" and labeled the attackers "absolute barbarians," insisting Ukraine must not be left alone against such terror.
