Army Confirms Abduction of Six Islamic Scholars in Zamfara
Police said a rescue mission is under way after bandits also seized two other people and a driver, one later freed after paying N1.9 million.
- On Saturday, gunmen abducted six Imams traveling to Talata Mafara in Zamfara State for a special prayer session. The Zamfara State Police Command confirmed the incident occurred near Damri village and launched a rescue mission.
- The prayer session was organized by Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Director-General of President Bola Tinubu's 2027 re-election campaign council. Organizers expected 2,933 Imams to attend the event in Talata Mafara for special prayers supporting the campaign.
- Bandits intercepted the clerics' vehicle at Gidan Suleiman Bature in Gonar Sarkin Forest, approximately three kilometers from Damri. Residents report armed groups control local farmlands, confining villagers and imposing levies on harvests.
- Police spokesperson DSP Yazid Abubakar confirmed officers from Bakura Local Government Area are actively searching for victims. Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba denied reports that clerics were abducted at Senator Yari's residence, stating they were traveling en route to meet him.
- Kidnapping for ransom remains frequent in Zamfara, where armed groups operate with significant freedom. Local residents describe their daily existence as confined to homes, fearing abduction whenever they venture outside.
