Army, Air Force crush ISWAP fighters after failed Chibok attack

Over 300 ISWAP fighters launched a coordinated assault on Chibok but were repelled by Nigerian Army and Air Force, with airstrikes killing many during retreat, officials said.

  • On Saturday, troops of the 28 Task Force Brigade, Sector 4 Operation Hadin Kai stopped a major ISWAP attack at Chibok, and soldiers engaged attackers in a fierce gunfight lasting about two hours.
  • More than 300 terrorists launched a coordinated assault on Chibok around 3:00 a.m., attempting to break through defenses; as they retreated toward the Timbuktu Triangle, troops called for air support and Nigerian Air Force aircraft engaged the fleeing fighters, security analyst Zagazola Makama reported.
  • Guided by ground intelligence, airstrikes struck several clustered escape groups using manned combat aircraft and an unmanned aerial platform targeting fighters dispersing into the forest.
  • A security source said the troops acted swiftly and professionally with no casualties or equipment losses among government forces.
  • According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the combined efforts of the Army and the Air Force dealt heavy blows to the attackers, preventing them from regrouping after the failed offensive.
