Buenos Aires rejects 'unilateral' offshore hydrocarbon activities in disputed area, warns firms involved could face legal sanctions
The Government lodged a formal protest with the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Buenos Aires.The measure was instructed by Chancellor Pablo Quirno in response to the announcement made by the authorities of the Malvinas Islands on the extension of offshore oil exploitation licences and the approval of the acquisition of a stake in the PL001 block by Navitas Petroleum Atlantic Limited.
The administration of the islands, supported by the British government, extended all existing offshore licenses and opened an additional two-year extension. The decision came as Argentina tightened its legal offensive against companies that operate hydrocarbons without national authorization and in the run-up to Javier Milei’s speech to the United Nations.
It did so in the run-up to Milei’s speech to the UN, in which a claim of Argentine sovereignty over the islands is expected. The government has already sent Congress the bill to sanction companies operating in the archipelago.
