Italian Biathlon Coach Returns to His Hometown to Guide US Team in Pursuit of Olympic Medals
Margie Freed and the U.S. mixed relay team aim to convert a recent World Cup fourth-place finish into the nation's first Olympic biathlon medal.
At the Olympic biathlon venue in Italy, the mixed relay kicked off Sunday, with the U.S. team competing and Apple Valley native Margie Freed participating.
Her transition to biathlon began a few years ago after reaching the 2016 State Nordic Ski Racing Meet as an eighth grader at Eastview High School and quickly learning shooting despite never firing a gun before.
Weeks ago, Freed helped the U.S. relay to a fourth-place World Cup mixed relay finish, tying the nation’s best result from 2015, and credits fun and diverse hobbies for sustaining her success.
Freed says her dream is a relay medal so teammates can share the excitement and she 'won't let that go' even under Olympic lights.
Freed recalls meeting Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall at a Mall of America event and notes that many of her original friends have retired, altering her training environment.
