Anthropic unveils Claude Opus 5.5
- On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5, the first model in its new 5.5 family, delivering frontier performance at significantly lower costs than Claude Opus 5.
- CEO Dario Amodei called on companies to "pace the frontier," and Opus 5.5 is the first model released since that call. It performs at levels comparable to Claude Fable 5.1 while generating output more than 30% faster than the previous Opus version.
- Opus 5.5 completed a 680,000-line code migration in less than a day, work previously requiring weeks of engineering effort. The model also succeeded in 39 of 40 software load-time optimization tests.
- Developers can access the model via API for $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. Anthropic is also increasing five-hour usage limits for Pro, Max, and Team subscribers.
- In the coming weeks, Anthropic plans to release Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5 with similar performance improvements. The company deployed external evaluators including METR and Frontier Design to test safeguards before release.
