Anthropic and OpenAI seek smaller data center deals in Europe
The AI labs are shifting toward 20-30 MW sites as inference demand rises and larger projects face delays, sources said.
- Anthropic and OpenAI are hunting for smaller AI data center deals, sources told CNBC, sounding out 20-30 MW compute capacity agreements across the U.K. and Nordics.
- Both companies have pursued massive infrastructure commitments over the past year, including Anthropic's roughly $45 billion Nscale deal in West Virginia for around 460 MW of capacity.
- Smaller capacity deals offer "speed to usable capacity," Jabez Tan, head of research at Structure Research, told CNBC, with inference workloads projected to use 37% of data center capacity by 2030 versus 13% for training.
- These deployments bypass construction delays plaguing large U.S. projects and sidestep community pushback against massive data centers in the U.S. and Europe, where land and power remain constrained.
- The shift toward distributed infrastructure extends industry-wide, with neocloud operator Crusoe investing in smaller data centers and Nvidia collaborating on inference-focused facilities as AI compute moves from training to production deployment.
