Coast Guard Rescues Cruise Ship Stuck in Antarctic Ice
The USCGC Polar Star used its 75,000 horsepower to break ice and escort the Scenic Eclipse II to safety during its 29th Antarctic deployment supporting Operation Deep Freeze.
- On Jan. 17, USCGC Polar Star freed the Australian luxury cruise ship Scenic Eclipse II after it became wedged in ice off the Ross Sea near McMurdo Sound and then escorted it four nautical miles to open water.
- On deployment supporting Operation Deep Freeze 2026, USCGC Polar Star maintained readiness for icebreaking, search-and-rescue, and sustaining the National Science Foundation's U.S. Antarctic Program.
- The Scenic Eclipse II, which carries 227 passengers and 176 crew, saw passengers watching from the observation deck and drinking champagne as the Coast Guard cleared the ice during Antarctica's warm season.
- Polar Star's maneuvers freed and escorted the cruise ship to open water, directly protecting passengers and crew aboard the Scenic Eclipse II and underscoring its vital role in U.S. Antarctic research logistics.
- Coincidentally the mission fell on the cutter's commissioning anniversary on January 17, 1976, and Commander Samuel Blase said `At 50 years old, Polar Star remains the world’s most capable non-nuclear icebreaker`.
