Barrier lake forms after Gyirong mudslide in Xizang
A powerful mudslide struck Gyirong County in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region on August 26 . The powerful geohazard also blocked the transboundary river channel, creating a dangerous barrier lake and adding severe secondary disaster risks to ongoing rescue operations.
The rescue work in Tibet after the deadly flood in the border area to Nepal was interrupted on Sunday because a new lake was formed as a result of a landslide.
Chinese rescue workers near the Kjirong border crossing in Tibet were hastily evacuated to safer areas on Sunday after a new landslide blocked a stream and created another dammed lake. Rescuers were alerted to the threat by surveillance drones.
