Eurozone Inflation Hits Three-Year High at 3.3% in August

Energy prices rose 14.3% in August, pushing eurozone inflation above the European Central Bank’s target as officials weigh another rate increase.

  • Eurozone inflation jumped to 3.3% in August, the highest level in three years, as the war in the Middle East kept pushing up energy costs, official Eurostat data showed Tuesday.
  • The war in the Middle East and near-total closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key energy trade route, have sent global energy costs soaring and intensified price pressure across the region.
  • Eurostat reported energy prices were up 14.3% in August, while Food and drinks inflation remained at 1.2% and Core inflation stayed largely stable in recent months.
  • The European Central Bank is expected to resume raising interest rates at its meeting on Sept 10 to tame the surge in prices, following a pause in July.
  • "Inflation should remain well above target into next year, as higher gas and Food prices put additional upward pressure on the index," said Leo Barincou of Oxford Economics.
