A 2-Year-Old at the Center of a Texas Brain-Death Dispute Is Taken Off Life Support and Dies
Her family had fought brain-death testing and sought transfer to another hospital before she was moved to Louisiana for continued care.
On Monday, 2-year-old Annelise Camp passed away after being removed from life support, her parents Johnston and Joy Camp announced, ending a months-long struggle following a drowning incident on Memorial Day.
The family previously fought a legal battle to prevent Texas Children from conducting brain death testing, eventually securing a transfer to a Louisiana facility in late June to seek alternative treatment options.
Court documents revealed that while the Camps sought alternative care, 35 of 36 medical facilities contacted declined to accept the toddler, with one pending hospital requiring brain death testing before considering transfer.
A Celebration of Life for Annelise is scheduled for next Wednesday in Houston, after the family previously posted on GoFundMe that she continued to show "encouraging signs" while in Louisiana.
The case drew support from The Texas Right and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who backed the family's efforts to delay brain death testing and explore medical options under Texas law.
