‘Firefly’ Star Nathan Fillion Says He’s Planning a New Animated Version of the Cult Sci-Fi Series
- On Sunday at Awesome Con, Washington, D.C., Nathan Fillion announced an animated Firefly series is in advanced development with most original cast members expected to reprise their roles.
- Last week, a viral social media campaign and the Once We Were Spacemen podcast, launched November with 18 episodes, helped fuel fan demand for more Firefly content.
- The project is being developed by Collision33 with 20th Television Animation, and showrunners Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters have completed a script while ShadowMachine created early concept art and Adam Baldwin is expected to voice Jayne Cobb.
- Positioned between the 2002 Firefly television series and Serenity, 2005 feature film, the animated series expands continuity while Firefly creator Joss Whedon is not involved.

After teasing a major announcement for the past few weeks, actor Nathan Fillion took the stage at Awesome Con on Sunday, March 15 to announce a new season of Firefly. The catch? The beloved live-action space-western will return as an animated series set between the end of the original show and the follow-up film Serenity.
Unfortunately, Joss Whedon is not involved in the project, but most of the original actors are scheduled to return as the voices of their characters.
