PAWS Chicago Welcomes Beagles Surrendered by Biomedical Research Center
The rescue groups will place the dogs in veterinary care and socialization before adoption, with about 500 expected to stay in Wisconsin, officials said.
On Friday, Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy began moving 1,500 beagles from Ridglan Farms, a Wisconsin-based breeding facility that supplied research laboratories.
Ridglan agreed to surrender its state breeding license by July 1, 2026, to avoid potential criminal charges following months of protests and investigations into alleged mistreatment at the Blue Mounds facility.
Organizations are transporting dogs in phases to partner facilities, with 300 heading to Big Dog Ranch locations in Florida and Alabama, while 500 remain in Wisconsin for adoption.
Lauree Simmons, CEO of Big Dog Ranch Rescue, said the dogs are receiving medical care and socialization. "They will need support as they adjust to environments they have never experienced before," Simmons said.
This effort reflects a broader shift away from animal testing, as federal agencies increasingly pledge to phase out programs and over 85% of Republicans and Democrats agree testing should be phased out.
