Burnham laughs off Monty Python heckle as he’s sworn in as MP
Burnham, considered the frontrunner to succeed Starmer, was sworn in as Makerfield MP amid an active Labour leadership race with nominations closing July 16.
On Monday, Andy Burnham was sworn in as the new Makerfield MP to cheers from Labour MPs, hours after Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation.
Starmer announced his departure on Monday, stating the party questioned "whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election" before pledging "my full and unequivocal support" to his successor.
Former health secretary Wes Streeting publicly announced his support for Burnham this morning, reinforcing the Greater Manchester Mayor's standing as a leading contender in the contest.
Candidates must secure support from at least 81 Labour MPs by July 16 to advance in the contest, with the National Executive Committee aiming to install a new leader by September 1.
Amid heckling from an MP shouting "He's not the messiah," Burnham emphasized the Labour movement must look forward with purpose, ensuring "this transition is a positive process of renewal for our party and our country.
