ANC Candidate List Blunder Could Cost the Party in the Eastern Cape
The ANC said 181 candidates were affected and 44 other parties faced similar problems as it pursues a court challenge over the missed deadline.
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula announced an internal review of the candidate nomination process after discovering inaccurate and unverified identity numbers in branch-submitted lists.
Of the 9,128 total candidates, Mbalula reported that the party submitted 97%, though 181 individuals were affected by issues related to the August 28 deadline.
The ANC's review traced the nomination process through nine stages, finding that branch structures submitted more than 200 identity numbers never verified against national records.
Despite the ongoing dispute with the Electoral Commission, Mbalula maintained that the IEC remains a credible institution as the ANC filed a challenge with the Electoral Court.
Linking its database with the Department of Home Affairs for automatic verification, the ANC expects reforms in place well ahead of the November 4 local government elections.
