Anambra: Cultists on rampage in Ogidi, kill community leader over death of member

The attack followed the death of cult member Emma Amasco, 25, leading to fatalities including the community leader, police said.

  • On Friday evening, armed men suspected members of the Neo-Black Movement attacked Ogidi community, killing Chief Ikwuka Okoye and one other person.
  • Police say the violence followed the unclear death of Emma Amasco, known Aye member, whose killing prompted members to vow revenge, the Anambra State Police Command said.
  • Reports show Amasco had been active in Onitsha earlier in the week and on Wednesday took over 18 phones and laptops to Sir Emeka Offor Plaza to sell before he was apprehended.
  • Authorities urged residents to remain calm, as police operatives have taken over the scene, are investigating with eyewitnesses, and are intensifying efforts to arrest suspects.
  • The traditional ruler of Ogidi and the now-deceased President General had requested that Amasco be brought back to Ogidi, despite reports that the President General had pushed to expel cultism, complicating local tensions.
