Anaheim Ducks Choose Mikael Granlund as the 10th Captain in Team History

On Tuesday, the Anaheim Ducks named 34-year-old Mikael Granlund the 10th captain in team history. The veteran Finnish forward enters his second season after helping end the team's seven-season playoff drought.
Granlund replaces defenseman Radko Gudas, who was traded to Florida after serving as captain for two seasons. Before Gudas, Ryan Getzlaf led the team for 12 seasons until his retirement in 2022.
General manager Pat Verbeek cited Granlund's "professionalism, humility, mentorship and quiet intensity" as key reasons for his selection. The 14-year NHL veteran also captained Finland at the 2026 Olympics and two world championships.
Anaheim also named four alternate captains to support the leadership group, with rising stars Leo Carlsson and Jackson LaCombe joining veterans Troy Terry and Alex Killorn.
Expectations remain high for the upcoming season after the Ducks reached the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs last spring under coach Joel Quenneville. The team opens the regular season Oct. 2 at Vegas.
