New Blood Test Spots One of Deadliest Cancers at Its Earliest Stages
The investigational blood test detected stage 1 and 2 disease with 87% accuracy and a 3% false-positive rate in low-risk patients.
- A large, international study published in Nature Medicine found that PANXEON, a new liquid biopsy test, successfully identified stage 1 and 2 pancreatic cancer with high sensitivity and low false-positive rates.
- Researchers at City of Hope led development of the test to address a critical challenge: 90% of pancreatic cancer patients receive diagnoses only after the malignancy has already spread to advanced stages.
- Testing nearly 1,800 patients across the United States, Europe, and Asia, the study found the test correctly identified stage 1 and 2 cancer 87% of the time and detected high-grade dysplasia, or "stage 0" cancer, more than 64% of the time.
- Senior author Ajay Goel said PANXEON helps identify high-risk patients needing further evaluation, stating, "The earlier we find pancreatic cancer, the greater the chance that meaningful intervention is still possible."
- Supported by a $150 million gift to the Stephenson Global Pancreatic Cancer Research Institute, City of Hope continues advancing early detection research and moving pancreatic cancer intervention earlier in disease progression.
