Tamil Nadu Seafood Plant Gas Leak: 6 Killed, Several Hospitalised as CM Vijay Forms Committee to Probe Incident
Seven workers died and more than 40 were hospitalised after ammonia spread through accommodation at a seafood export unit, officials said.
On Sunday, an ammonia gas leak at St Peters Paul Seafoods Exports Private Limited in Kannigaipair, Tiruvallur, killed seven migrant workers among about 120 laborers present on the factory premises.
Sunday was the unit's weekly holiday, leaving many workers inside their on-campus accommodations when the ammonia originated from the seafood processing unit and quickly spread through the residential area.
Tiruvallur District Collector S Kavitha reported 67 affected workers were rushed to local medical centres, with 46 admitted to Vels Hospital and 21 to Venkateshwara Hospital; nine critically ill patients transferred to Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai.
Following district administration request, a 30-member National Disaster Response Force team deployed from Arakkonam with specialized equipment to assist rescue efforts; Periyapalayam police registered a case.
Chief Minister Vijay instructed an inquiry committee comprising the Director of Industrial Safety and Health, Pollution Control Board Member-Secretary, and Additional Director of Public Health to submit an interim report within 24 hours.
