IndiGo Flights Face Massive Delays After Rostering Shake-up: How New Pilot Rest Rules Triggered a Full-Blown Crisis

IndiGo canceled over 100 flights due to crew shortages linked to new Flight Duty Time Limitations and other disruptions, with on-time performance dropping to 35%, regulators said.

  • On Wednesday, IndiGo cancelled more than 100 flights across Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad and initiated calibrated adjustments to stabilise operations over the next 48 hours.
  • The second phase of Flight Duty Time Limitations norms, implemented on November 1, reduced night landings and sources said it caused an acute crew shortage, straining IndiGo's operations.
  • At least 42 flights were cancelled at the Bangalore airport, 38 at the Delhi airport, 33 at the Mumbai airport and 19 at the Hyderabad airport, while government data showed IndiGo's OTP fell to 35% on December 2.
  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation said it is investigating IndiGo and has asked the airline to present facts and mitigation plans, while IndiGo offered alternate travel or refunds to affected customers and apologised.
  • Pilot unions criticised IndiGo's staffing and planning, calling it a failure of resource planning, while DGCA proposed stronger crew rostering, better ATC and airport coordination, and improved turnaround processes.
