What’s Making 4 in 5 Americans Doubt AI?
Pew found 49% of adults use AI chatbots, but only 16% expect AI to help society and 40% expect harm.
A new Pew Research Center survey reveals that 49 percent of American adults now use AI chatbots, up sharply from 33 percent in 2024, even as public sentiment toward the technology has grown increasingly negative.
Americans overwhelmingly believe the technology is advancing "too fast," with 63 percent expressing this concern, while 71 percent fear AI will make their personal information less secure.
Younger adults under 30 report the highest usage at 66 percent, yet they remain the most skeptical, with 48 percent believing AI will have a negative impact on society over the next 20 years.
Eighty-Six percent of adults are distrustful of AI results, particularly when lacking clear attribution, and 75 percent worry that online content is controlled by a small handful of companies.
Amid these concerns, 75 percent of Americans find humans more helpful than AI when seeking assistance on business websites, reflecting a continuing preference for human interaction over automated responses.
