Americans Don't Like Trump's Jesus Posts and Back Pope Leo, Poll Shows
The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll found 87% of Americans reacted negatively to Trump's Jesus-like image, while Pope Leo XIV held a 25-point favorable margin.
A new Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll shows nearly 9 in 10 Americans hold a negative reaction to an AI-generated image President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social depicting himself as Jesus Christ, including 69% expressing a strongly negative reaction.
Shortly before posting the AI image, Trump criticized Pope Leo XIV on Truth Social as "Weak on Crime, Weak on Nuclear Weapons" amid tensions over the pope's stance on the Iran war.
Pope Leo maintains a 25-point net favorable margin among Americans overall with 41% favorable, while 76% of Americans disapprove of a separate Trump post threatening that "a whole civilization will die tonight," seemingly suggesting nuclear weapons use.
Trump's approval rating dropped to 37%, down from 45% in February 2025, while 80% of those who voted for him expressed a negative reaction to his recent Truth Social posts, the poll found.
These findings emerge just days before Secretary of State Marco Rubio makes a high-stakes visit to the Vatican, navigating the president's ongoing friction with Pope Leo XIV as diplomatic tensions persist.
