Berlin Summons Russian Ambassador over Increase in Hybrid Attacks
Germany warned Russia of consequences after attributing a 2024 air-traffic cyberattack and election interference campaign to Russia's GRU military-intelligence agency.
- On Friday, Germany's foreign ministry summoned the Russian ambassador in Berlin amid a massive increase in threatening hybrid activities, ministry spokesman Martin Giese said.
- The campaigns use disinformation, espionage, cyberattacks and attempted sabotage, with officials citing operations like Fancy Bear and Storm 15.
- German officials said they attributed two social-media campaigns to Russia with GRU links by tracking financial transactions, and investigators flagged false claims targeting Annalena Baerbock and Friedrich Merz.
- Together with its European partners, Germany will impose countermeasures to make Russia pay a price for its hybrid actions, including sanctions with travel bans and freezing of assets, Martin Giese said.
- Between July 2024 and July this year, cases investigated included videos about Annalena Baerbock and a cyberattack on Germany's air-traffic control.
