Amazon Is Giving Fire TV Owners Alexa Plus for Free, No Prime Membership Required

The upgrade adds conversational search, smart-home controls and AI recommendations as Amazon says Alexa+ users now have nearly twice as many Fire TV conversations.

  • On Wednesday, Amazon announced that Alexa Plus is now available at no cost on all compatible Fire TV devices, eliminating the need for a Prime membership or separate app downloads.
  • Previously, Amazon required a Prime membership or a $20 monthly subscription for the AI assistant, but this shift now opens core features to current-generation hardware including the Fire TV Cube and Amazon Ember TVs.
  • Alexa Plus delivers a "smarter, more conversational voice experience" that understands context better than original Alexa, allowing users to request "a top-rated thriller" or refine searches for "something newer" without restarting queries.
  • While core features are free, advanced tools like Alexa Routines, specific Ring camera moments, and Home Modes remain restricted to paid subscribers, though users can control lighting, lock doors, and view security feeds via voice.
  • Amazon plans to roll out the AI assistant to 10 further regions in 2027, following similar industry shifts as competitors like Roku and Google have also integrated AI-powered voice assistants into their platforms.
