Baby Who Grew Outside of Uterus, Behind 22-Pound Cyst, Born in California
A multidisciplinary team at Cedars-Sinai delivered a healthy 8-pound baby and removed a 22-pound ovarian cyst during a rare full-term abdominal pregnancy surgery.
- On Aug. 18, Suze Lopez, a 41-year-old emergency room nurse, underwent a combined 22-pound cyst removal and delivery of newborn Ryu at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with about 30 medical professionals.
- Because Lopez had irregular periods and chronic abdominal discomfort, the pregnancy was missed until pre-op testing; a noncancerous ovarian cyst masked signs while scans revealed an abdominal ectopic pregnancy near the liver.
- Facing life-threatening bleeding, anesthesiologist Michael Sanchez and colleagues stabilized Lopez with 11 blood units while Cedars-Sinai NICU immediately cared for newborn Ryu.
- Clinicians said the survival to near-term makes this an exceptionally rare case as physicians said in their careers they've never heard of an abdominal ectopic pregnancy reaching this stage.
- Because clinicians saw a full-term infant outside the uterus, it highlights the need for perioperative preparedness, as clinical guidance treats ectopic pregnancies as life-threatening requiring emergency obstetric and perioperative teams, operating room readiness and blood resources, Cedars-Sinai clinicians said.
