In Europe, much more local West Nile cases have been registered this year than in previous years. A country is particularly affected.

Since the spring, well over 1,500 West Nile cases have been registered in Europe, in which they have been infected in their own country - not abroad. With around 696 of the 1,569 cases in total, Italy is the most affected, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported as at 23 September. Greece is followed by 355 cases and Spain (125 cases). Seven cases are reported for Austria.
