Ma'a Nonu Thrills Kings Park with a Solo Haka for the Sharks Against the All Blacks
On Tuesday, Nonu performed a solo haka for the Sharks against the All Blacks at Kings Park in Durban, South Africa, marking the teams' first meeting in 30 years.
The Sharks signed Nonu a week ago to develop young players, but injuries lengthened their roster needs and forced him onto the bench for this friendly match.
Before the match, Nonu consulted New Zealand assistant coach Tana Umaga and New Zealand assistant coach Tamati Ellison on Monday about performing the haka. "Out of respect for our team," Nonu said, "I thought it was the right thing to do."
The New Zealanders won 54-0 at soggy Kings Park. Nonu entered during the final quarter, where his first touch was a tackle on flyhalf Ruben Love, who was 2 years old when Nonu debuted for New Zealand.
Nonu praised the All Blacks after the match, saying "Credit to them, they're improving." He expressed gratitude for facing the New Zealand boys and called the experience a privilege.
