Alito: Overturning Roe v. Wade took ‘courage’ from Supreme Court justices
Alito said the Dobbs ruling took courage from every justice in the majority and acknowledged the case’s personal and political costs.
Justice Samuel Alito told CBS in an interview released Friday that the 2022 Dobbs decision was the "leading example" of a case requiring "courage" from the majority.
The 2022 Dobbs decision returned authority over abortion to the states, demanding resolve from the justices who joined Alito in the majority opinion overturning Roe and Wade.
Alito described losing old friendships and facing physical threats after the ruling, experiences he characterized as "something you have to live with." His opposition to Roe predates the decision, rooted in his judicial philosophy.
The 76-year-old Alito confirmed he considered retiring at the end of the previous term but decided to stay, expecting to revisit the question annually as political circumstances remain uncertain.
Rejecting claims that the Supreme Court acts politically, Alito stated "We are not part of any political movement" and insisted the court interprets the Constitution impartially, despite recent criticism from Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
