Algerian court upholds 7-year sentence for French journalist Christophe Gleizes
Algerian court upheld Christophe Gleizes' seven-year sentence for terrorism glorification linked to his reporting on a banned separatist group, rights groups and French officials condemn the ruling.
- On Wednesday, December 3 an Algerian appeals court in Tizi Ouzou upheld a seven-year sentence for Christophe Gleizes, 36-year-old French sports journalist, who has been in custody since June 29.
- Authorities say he was convicted of violating Algeria's anti-terrorism laws and possessing propaganda materials after entering on a tourist visa while reporting on JS Kabylie and meeting a MAK-linked official.
- In Tizi Ouzou Gleizes pleaded guilty, acknowledged many journalistic mistakes, and said he was `Ashamed to admit it` about not knowing the MAK was listed as a terrorist organisation.
- The French government condemned the ruling and called for Gleizes' release, while a pardon from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is now the only realistic option.
- Amid a wider diplomatic rift, rights groups say Algeria uses anti-terror laws to target political speech, shutter outlets, and prosecute journalists, straining France-Algeria relations.

He has been imprisoned since June for "apology of terrorism", and has been sentenced to seven years in prison on Wednesday.
He asked for forgiveness and acknowledged his mistakes. However, the Algerian courts confirmed on 3 December the heavy seven-year sentence imposed on Christophe Gleizes for his contacts with the MAK. The hope for the release of the French journalist passed away after a trying trial.
