Alfalfa sprout linked to food poisoning outbreak in 15 states, health officials say
Health officials tied the outbreak to alfalfa sprouts from a Minnesota grower, with 46 patients infected with E. coli and seven with salmonella.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed 55 cases of E. coli and salmonella across 15 states linked to alfalfa sprouts, with four patients hospitalized.
Everything Sprouts, a Minnesota grower, produced the contaminated sprouts sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands to restaurants and grocery stores.
Of 34 sick people interviewed, 26 reported eating alfalfa sprouts, according to the Food and Drug Administration; the outbreak involves Salmonella and STEC pathogens.
Everything Sprouts said it has "not received any positive lab results," though the FDA sent a warning letter last year citing facility concerns including a leaking roof.
State officials announced the outbreak earlier this week, with at least 23 cases in Minnesota and at least 17 in Wisconsin; infections can lead to acute kidney failure.
