What Alex Cora Said in Email to Red Sox Organization Following Surprise Firing
Cora thanked the organization and said he was disappointed the Red Sox did not finish the job after a 10-17 start.
After a 9-17 start to the 2026 season, the Boston Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora and six coaching staff members last Saturday. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow cited poor performance across hitting, pitching, defense, and base running.
Sources described the dynamic between Breslow and Cora as "misaligned" and "fractured," with significant tension over coaching staff and player development methods. Cora reportedly told Breslow that changes to his staff would require firing the manager himself.
Four days after his dismissal, Cora sent a detailed email to the organization expressing gratitude while noting he was "disappointed that we didn't finish the job." The message drew widespread praise for its professionalism and emotional tone.
Cora told the New York Post he will not manage during the 2026 season to focus on being a "full-time dad," though he remains on the payroll for the next year and a half. This allows him to prioritize family time.
During his eight seasons in Boston, Cora led the team to a 2018 World Series championship and a franchise-record 108 regular-season wins. Club owner John Henry stated Cora will always have the organization's "deepest gratitude" for his tenure.
