Alberta’s Smith lauds new major Canada-U.S. oil pipeline permit, citing advocacy
The 1,050-kilometre project would move two-thirds as much oil as Keystone XL, and company officials expect construction to start next year.
- On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed a presidential permit authorizing the Bridger Pipeline expansion, which Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says results from years of advocacy by her government.
- The expansion partially revives the Keystone XL pipeline, which former U.S. president Joe Biden canceled in 2021 citing climate-change concerns, though Trump previously approved the original Keystone project in 2020.
- Sometimes called "Keystone Light," the 1,050-kilometre pipeline would move more than half a million barrels of oil daily, with Bridger Pipeline LLC stating 80 per cent of the route sits on private land.
- "It's incredible to see that work already paying off with announcements like this," Smith said, noting that delivering energy to the United States helps secure North American energy dominance.
- The project requires additional state and federal environmental approvals before construction begins next year, while environmentalists hope to stop the project over concerns regarding potential pipeline spills in Montana and Wyoming.
