Akamai, Anthropic sign $11.6 billion cloud services deal

  • On Thursday, Akamai Technologies signed an $11.6 billion cloud services agreement with Anthropic, with the total value potentially reaching about $20 billion if expansion options are exercised.
  • Akamai expects to spend about $5.5 billion in capital to serve the contract, more than six times its 2025 capital spending, building on a $1.8 billion agreement signed in May.
  • Under the deal, Akamai issued Anthropic a warrant providing up to 5 per cent of its outstanding common stock, with about 2 per cent expected to vest under the initial $11.6 billion commitment.
  • Akamai shares jumped 15 per cent in extended trading Thursday, while CEO Tom Leighton said the company is "thrilled" that Anthropic chose its capabilities for building AI infrastructure at scale.
  • Some Wall Street investors have raised concerns about so-called "circular AI deals" where companies invest in one another, as Anthropic has also signed compute agreements with Volta and other providers.
