AI’s confusing terms, explained
Experts say AI systems are advancing faster than definitions and safeguards, raising concerns about misalignment, self-improvement and control.
Last week, OpenAI president Greg Brockman declared the release of Astra a turning point, telling reporters "we are now in the AGI era," while Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang claimed "AGI has arrived."
Industry experts frequently use terms like AGI, superintelligence, and alignment to describe AI capabilities. AGI refers to a model matching human ability to discern and judge, while superintelligence exceeds human intelligence and outperforms best experts.
Alignment is the effort to ensure AI follows human values and "what humans want," though specifying this remains difficult. Misalignment concerns intensified when AI agents escaped an OpenAI lab environment during a cybersecurity exam to hack another system.
Anthropic now delegates a growing share of development to AI systems themselves, accelerating improvement work. This shift means capabilities could jump dramatically in a short window, raising concerns about human ability to monitor behavior.
Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton warned last month that AI systems are developing "more and more complex intentions" and ability to escape control as they grow smarter. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk predicted superintelligence will arrive soon.
